Do you need a permit or certificate to install air conditioning in Spain?
Viva Home Air · Updated October 2026
Yes. Air conditioning installation in Spain must comply with the RITE (Reglamento de Instalaciones Térmicas en los Edificios). Your installer must issue a certificate of installation and register it with the regional industry authority. A registered company handles all of this for you — an uncertified or DIY install can void the warranty and your home insurance.
What RITE requires
RITE is Spain's regulation for thermal installations. For a compliant AC install it means proper technical documentation, a signed certificate of installation, and registration with the Comunidad Valenciana's industry registry. Refrigerant handling (R32, R410A) must be done by F-Gas certified technicians.
Why it matters
A certified installation protects your manufacturer warranty, keeps your home insurance valid, and is legally required. It also matters at resale — buyers and their lawyers increasingly ask for the installation certificate. An uncertified job can be refused by insurers if something goes wrong.
Who handles the paperwork
A registered installer does it all — you don't deal with any bureaucracy. Ask whether the boletín / certificate and registration are included in the quote (with a reputable company they are).
Frequently asked questions
Can I install air conditioning myself in Spain?
Legally the installation and refrigerant work must be done by RITE- and F-Gas-certified professionals, and registered. A DIY install is not compliant and can void warranties and insurance.
Is the certificate included in the price?
With a registered installer it normally is. Always confirm the RITE certificate and registration are part of the quote.
