How often should you service your air conditioning?
Viva Home Air · Updated October 2026
Air conditioning should be serviced once a year, ideally in spring before the cooling season. A service deep-cleans the coils and filters, checks refrigerant pressure and tests the system. On the salty Costa Blanca coast, outdoor units benefit from more frequent checks. Skipping maintenance cuts efficiency, worsens air quality and shortens the unit's life.
What a service includes
A full service covers a deep clean of the evaporator and condenser coils, filter cleaning or replacement and sanitisation, a refrigerant level check and top-up if needed, electrical and drainage checks, and a performance test. A good installer leaves a short report afterwards.
Why yearly matters on the coast
Salt, dust and humidity clog and corrode units faster here than inland. A clogged unit uses more electricity, cools worse, can grow mould in the filters, and fails sooner. Annual maintenance is the cheapest way to protect an expensive install.
What it costs
A one-off deep clean starts from about €80 per unit. Annual maintenance contracts — which include priority scheduling and discounted parts — start from around €130 per unit per year on the Costa Blanca.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just clean the filters myself?
You can rinse the filters monthly in summer, and should. But a full service also cleans the coils, checks gas and tests the system — jobs that need a technician.
What happens if I skip servicing?
Efficiency drops, bills rise, air quality worsens, and small faults become expensive failures. Many warranties also require annual servicing to stay valid.
